Microsoft Says Next OS Will Be Windows 10 & A Drone Story

I know that 13 is supposed to be an unlucky number but I’ve never heard that 9 might be. Maybe only Microsoft knows because yesterday they announced they’ll be skipping right past 9 and their new late 2015 operating system will be named Windows 10. There have been all kinds of speculation about what the new Windows is going to be and what it will look like but no one guessed it was going to be Windows 10.

If it’s not just superstition why would Microsoft skip from Windows 8 to Windows 10? In a statement that no doubt made more than a few techies gag and wretch uncontrollably a Microsoft spokesman said Windows 10 “represents such a significant leap over Windows 8 that calling it Windows 9 would not do it justice.”  First, Windows 8 hasn’t exactly been embraced with open arms by users so it might only take a hop, skip or a jump to make it all that significant.

In the little that was displayed about Windows 10 yesterday there was a lot of news that many Windows 7, Vista and diehard XP users could take heart in. Microsoft has finally confirmed the Start Menu will return but not exactly like it was in Windows 7. The menu will be split: on the left, apps will be shown in the familiar Windows 7 style while on the right the apps will be the more colorful “live tiles” that open the modern Windows 8 style apps. The start menu will be completely customizable.

Windows 10, at least from what I’ve seen and heard, seems to be a combination of Windows 7 and 8 that borrows design elements from each. I love both OS’s so I’ve got no problems with it. Microsoft promises that Windows 10 will be more intuitive than Windows 8. “Windows 10 will be familiar to end users whether they’re coming from Windows 7 or Windows 8.” The Start Menu which seems to confuse so many will still be there so we’ll see on that. But, we’ve got a full year ahead to wait.

It’s a drone – kill it!!Gadget Show

In a rather bizarre event this week, even for rootin’ tootin’ gun nuts, a New Jersey man spotted his neighbor’s camera-equipped drone flying over his house. For reasons known only to him, he ran into his house, fetched his shotgun and peppered the drone with holes, knocking it from the sky.

The shooter was arrested and charged with Unlawful Use of a Weaponhandcuffs-generic-4

The drone (remote helicopter) owner told police he heard several gunshots as he simultaneously lost control of the drone.  He called the police and after finding out who the shooter was, a 31 yr. old man, they arrested and charged him with Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose and Criminal Mischief. The shotgun used to shoot down the drone was seized by police.  Good, I say!

Facebook, Google and Amazon are betting heavily on drones for all kinds of uses. They already have prototypes to not only deliver products but to provide Internet access anywhere. Does this mean that guys with guns are going to start shooting at these drones like it’s some kind of skeet shooting contest?  I’m still trying to figure out why a guy would grab a shotgun to shoot a neighbour’s remote helicopter out of the sky?

Thanks for visiting!
