Mason’s First Train Ride At Victoria’s Galey Farms Funland

Galey’s Farm, just minutes from downtown Victoria is not exactly Disneyland but to our 15 month old Grandson it could have been!  Carrie took Mason there on Sunday morning along with her friend Karen and her son. Galey’s is not only a working farm but a tourist attraction that features a 1 mile long train ride, petting zoo, corn maze, western town, hayrides, haunted house, dinosaurs and many other attractions that appeal to little kids and adults alike. And, it won’t max out your credit card!

Galey’s Farm grows thousands of tons of produce annually for the people of Vancouver Island,  It’s been in operation for over 75 years and in 2000, Galey Farms expanded its operation to include agri-tourism to increase viability and to educate the public on how their food is grown and why farming is important to a community.

Mason’s been having a lot of firsts lately and Carrie said he just loved the train ride and riding in a wagon being pulled by a big John Deere tractor was a hit too.

The Galey farm began when Don Galey purchased 50 acres of farm land in the late 1930’s and he became the 9th permanent resident of Cordova Bay now a thriving suburb of Victoria. The farm began as a small dairy, and Don delivered milk by horse and wagon. After clearing land by hand, they started to grow crops in the late 1940’s. And they weren't alone; from the late 1800’s through to the 1960’s, Victoria had upwards of 100 farms. Today, there are only a handful.

In the 1960’s, Don and Mary sold the dairy and started an egg farm. In 1985, Ray and Gordon Galey moved the farm from Cordova Bay to its current location the beautiful Blenkinsop Valley just down the road a few miles.
