Celebrating Thanksgiving With A Traditional Feast

In Canada, Thanksgiving is celebrated on the 2nd Monday in October which is this Monday coming up. This year’s USA Thanksgiving Day will be November 27th as that’s the 4th Thursday of November. There are all kinds of stories and theories as to why our Thanksgivings are so far apart.  The US had the Pilgrims with that folklore being passed down through the ages. As for us Canadians we didn’t have any Pilgrims but we did have a famous explorer called Martin Frobisher.

A very typical Thanksgiving Dinner at our home as prepared by PauletteIMG_7901[3]

Frobisher wasn’t all that famous to me as I had to Google a couple of years ago to find out that he was responsible for our country’s first Thanksgiving way back in 1578. Frobisher was trying to find a Northwest Passage to the Pacific, got lost and ended up in Newfoundland. He was rather lucky as both Henry Hudson and Sir John Franklin later died trying this. To celebrate his good fortune, Frobisher held a formal ceremony featuring a great feast that became known as Thanksgiving.

We were most Thankful last year for our  Grandson Mason – Ditto this year!!IMG_7909[7]

We are going to Carrie and Mason’s this Sunday for Thanksgiving but last year our little 4 month old Grandson Mason was the star of the show. We are all so very grateful to have this little man in our lives and guess what?  He’ll no doubt be the star of the show this Sunday as well.

I won’t be worrying about a diet this Thanksgiving Day for sureIMG_7904[3]

Our typical Thanksgiving dinner usually consists of turkey, dressing, yams, mashed potatoes, gravy, cranberry sauce, peas, carrots and a broccoli cheese bake.  Since I’ve been doing a lot of extra walking, exercising and less eating lately I figure I can afford to enjoy a really good dinner on Sunday night without worrying a bit about calories or any of that other annoying stuff.

For dessert, we might have pumpkin and apple pie and apple crispIMG_7931[3]

Dessert is not to be forgotten or ignored either. I’m sure we’ll be having a choice of both Pumpkin and Apple Pie along with Apple Crisp and a choice of ice cream or whipped cream toppings.  I think I’ll be having to double my steps goal to 20,000 for a few days after dinner on Sunday.

Happy Thanksgiving Day to all my fellow Canadians and thanks for visiting!
