“Good Guys With A Gun” Killed By “Bad Guys With A Gun”

The NRA took a full week to finally speak out after the slaughter of school children in Newtown, Conn. in December, 2012 that left 26 people dead including 20 children. The often crazy-sounding NRA Executive VP Wayne LaPierre said “these people might still be alive today if school personnel were armed when 20-year-old gunman Adam Lanza entered Sandy Hook Elementary School.” He then famously added “the only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is with a good guy with a gun,”

This past Sunday, 2 Las Vegas police offers were horrendously gunned down in a shooting rampage while they ate at a pizza shop. The killers were a married white supremacist couple who after fatally shooting the police officers took their weapons and went into the nearby Walmart store. There, Jerad Miller and his wife Amanda Miller, fired off one round, and told shoppers, "this is a revolution."

At this point “the good guy with a gun”, Joseph Robert Wilcox, 31, made a decision which cost him his life. Wilcox pulled out the handgun for which he had a concealed weapons permit and confronted Jerad Miller. Amanda Miller, who was behind Wilcox pulled out her gun and shot Wilcox one time in the ribs. Wilcox died without ever having fired a shot. In the ensuing gunfight with police Amanda Miller fired several rounds at Jerad killing him, then ended her own life with a single gunshot.

Joseph Robert Wilcox is being hailed by many as a hero. His uncle, John Wilson, told the Las Vegas Review Journal that, “He wasn’t political. But he definitely believed in the right to bear arms and the right to defend yourself and others.”  I’m no expert on guns that’s for sure but it seems to be that in a gunfight the guy who fires first usually wins and most times the bad guy always shoots first. That’s the reality that Wayne LaPierre and the NRA don’t like to admit.

Without getting into a pointless, futile debate about Second Amendment Rights in the U.S. Constitution I’ll just say this about this whole sorry episode: 3 good guys with guns are dead all killed by the 2 bad guys with guns who killed themselves. Every single person who died was carrying a gun. No unarmed person in the pizza restaurant or the Walmart was injured. I believe if Joseph Robert Wilcox had left home with just his modem and not his gun, he would be alive today.

First Mounties shot dead in the line of duty since 2007 laid to rest in Moncton

Here in Canada, we suffered the loss of 3 RCMP officers killed by a deranged man with a rifle last Wednesday in the quiet town of Moncton, NB. The RCMP officers were the first Mounties shot dead in Canada in the line of duty since Nov. 5, 2007. While that is an extremely long time given the dangers of police work it’s not long enough. The three dead RCMP officers have been identified as PC Fabrice Georges Gevaudan, PC David Joseph Ross and PC Douglas James Larche.

After an all-out 2 day manhunt, an RCMP emergency task force arrested suspect Justin Bourque in the shootings of the 3 Moncton Mounties with one eyewitness quoting him as telling police “I’m done.”  Bourque was taken into custody without any further violence after he was tracked and cornered in a residential back yard.
