Microsoft is on the move and big-time under new CEO Satya Nadella (left). In announcing that Windows 10 will be free (for 1 year) to all users of Windows 7 and 8, Microsoft has removed the biggest obstacle to adoption of Windows 10 – the cost.
More importantly, it has also negated the second biggest obstacle – the fact that many Windows users just can’t be bothered or may in fact be afraid to risk going through the Windows OS install and upgrade process.
How has Microsoft removed this upgrade obstacle? Simple. Beginning with the release of Windows 10 later this year the new operating system will be automatically installed as part of the Windows Update process. If you happen to have Auto-Update set to on then one day this year you’ll simply wake up to see that your computer has been ‘upgraded’ from Windows 7 or 8 to Windows 10 without any stress or input from you. It’s an absolutely free upgrade for Windows 7 and 8 users.
Windows 10 will be free (except for XP users) and a Windows Update
Microsoft has built such great operating systems like the ubiquitous XP and the well liked Windows 7 that they have become victim to users who simply don’t like change. This is very costly to them as they have to support older, antiquated products. Enter the new strategy designed to overcome both fear and lethargy – make it free and simple to install. Some folks will never want to upgrade no matter what so the option for them is to make sure you have automatic updates set to ‘OFF’ and manage them by yourselves. I don’t really recommend that!

How and why is Microsoft able to do this? Mountains of cash. They have stockpiled over $80 billion in cash reserves and that is 4x what it had just 4 years ago. Microsoft is making a huge move to make Windows 10 work across all computers from desktops to Surface and their Windows Phone. In fact, in this sense they are moving quickly ahead of Apple who’s iPad and iPhone are rapidly falling behind Microsoft’s Surface tablet – Windows 10 will only make it more profound.
