Wacko Republican Senator Says Restaurants Should Be Able To Opt-Out Of Mandatory Handwashing

I’m not making this up as it seems on face value to be too plain stupid to make up.  But, with GOP presidential candidates like Gov. Chris Christie and Sen. Rand Paul now coming out against mandatory vaccination for Measles, who knows what this bunch of nutbars will think of next in the name of their own particular definition of “freedom”.  The strange thing with these guys is that they seem to be so strongly in favour of medical “freedom” except when it comes to a woman’s right to choose.

Here’s wacko North Carolina Senator Thom Tillis on restaurant handwashing:

Here are the facts on handwashing apart from the fact that restaurant workers not washing their hands is completely disgusting:

The spread of germs from the hands of food workers to food is an important cause of foodborne illness outbreaks in restaurants. It accounts for 89% of outbreaks in which food was contaminated by food workers. Proper handwashing can reduce germs on workers’ hands and the spread of germs from hands to food and from food to other people.

Despite the facts, Sen. Tillis and his GOP co-horts only care about making sure businesses are free to operate under any conditions they'd like and that is apparently more important than public health and safety.

While he’s at it, I suppose Sen. Tillis might also like to abolish those pesky maintenance checks and upgrades that the NTSB insists commercial airlines adhere to.  After all, businesses will always do their best to ensure the safety of their customers despite the impact on profits, right? And, if planes from carriers who do not do the safety inspections start to crash then passengers will obviously choose to fly on other airlines, right?  See, the free market system works without government regulations!  Problem solved – no need for pesky safety maintenance checks.

Thanks for visiting!
